I've been listening to this CD all afternoon without stopping, and have done so many times before. What else can one say. It is amazing that Iris is not better known. She did fill the Festival Hall the other week, but that was probably because she shared the bill with John Prine. For her own concert a year or more ago it was just the Queen Elizabeth Hall, a good bit smaller ! It is also a great surprise that more artists don't use her songs - she writes them all herself. Kate Rusby did 'Our Town' on 'Sleepless' and it always goes down a treat, but that's all I know of. This woffle is because I don't really know how to start actually describing the songs and the singing - they are so much part of life that I don't know what to say. Often they're very sad, and these are the best ones; life is sad sometimes and it helps to hear someone expressing it so beautifully. Leaving home, loved ones dying, ending relationships, life just not giving what we hoped for - try 'Easy's Getting Harder Every Day', which always produces a sort of great communal sigh at a concert, before the rapturous applause. Do give it a listen, it might enhance your life tremendously. ANd if you like it, try nagging the BBC to show again the first series of 'Transatlantic Sessions', which is where a lot of us in the UK first were transfixed by Iris as she sang 'Our Town' (about leaving the town of her life's living). Ten stars if that were possible !
