This was reviewed in the Guardian, where it was thought to show the influence of Frank Zappa. Being a Zappa fan, I decided to buy it. I am happy to say that it does, indeed have many of the characteristics of the less indulgent side of Zappa. The CD opens with a piece on the marimba, which is very reminiscent of Zappa. There are the usual slow passages interspersed with short, sharp phrases from the horns. Plus the signature staccato phrases on percussion which are then joined by the keyboards. But it would be a mistake to see this as merely a clone of Zappa, as it has sustained excellence, which cannot be said of many Zappa pieces.
