I have a sentimental weakness for films and novels from Australia. Thus I'd give the film 'Australia' five stars for an emotional epic. This might be because although I have visited Australia five times all have been on business with the longest stay lasting 3 days. Hence the country might be a haze to me. Nonetheless, despite my apparent over marking of the 'Australia' film and Australian cinema generally, my generosity tends not to stretch to novels.
This novel is, however, remarkable. As others have noted, and I won't review the plot here as many others have already done so, the book casts a compelling view of Australia of the recent past. The book is immersive and compelling. I wish it were longer, or more can follow. Mind you I wish for a film 'Australia 2' following the end of the threat of Japanese threat.
A wonderful book and a wonderful continent. Read the novel.
