This review is from: Haydn: The Complete Symphonies (Audio CD)
I bought this set after spending quite a lot of time being discouraged by reviews in various parts of the internet which tended to be damning. Having sampled a range of the symphonies I can only feel sad that such a great undertaking - the recording of all these splendid and at times brilliant symphonies in a series of concerts titled Haydn is Fun! - by a superb orchestra and conductor should be seen by anybody as a reason to carp. Yes, it is a bargain -price set, and yes there is the odd careless mistake in the translation of the notes from German to English.. but the music? That, to me, my ears and all, is so well done that I want to thank the musicians, and Sony, for this splendid set. I listen to the other major recordings and I love them - Dorati, Fischer and the incomplete cycle by Hogwood - and I have no reason to think that this set cannot join them. You don't have to be a Haydn "anorak" to enjoy these performances, and I do not find that any technical hitches spoil the experience.
Now the set is cheaper than ever - that's why I bought it, and I would not have been disappointed if I had had to pay more. This is glorious music played with style and a spring in its step! And when, if ever, will a new cycle of these 108 symphonies appear?
