If there was any justice in the world Antonia Forest would be regarded as one of the greatest British children's authors and all of her books would have been in print continuously. Fortunately Girls Gone By have republished many of them but it's been a long wait! Autumn Term was her first and best book and, much as I love Susan Cooper, Arthur Ransome, Philip Pullman and many others it remains my favourite children's book. I must have re-read it 25 times, but it never bores me. Forest has a wonderful gift of making her characters come alive, and the school setting is totally authentic and believable. Compare it with Enid Blyton's school stories, which, although good fun, are full of inconsistencies and implausible plot twists. Antonia rules!
