5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic action anime!, 5 Mar. 2013
This review is from: Towanoquon Complete Series Collection [DVD] (DVD)
Towanoquon is a six episode tv show (episodes are longer than your standard 30 min anime episode) It is an action anime with a storyline that parallels in many ways to the popular X men franchises story.

I'll start with my one issue with the show- It is clear there were originally meant to be more episodes but for whatever reasons the show was cut down a bit. This does leave a few small gaps in the storyline here and there and things don't always flow perfectly between scenes, it doesn't detract too much from the overall experience but it can be a little annoying on a first viewing.

That is about it for the negatives!

Onto the positives, and the obvious place to start here is the action. The fight scenes are superb and are some of the most memorable I've seen in quite some time. The animation is almost always smooth and flowing. And whilst some of the faster paced scenes do loose some detail on certain characters the actual choreography and pacing is absolutely spot on.

The storyline, as I said does in a lot of ways parallel the X men with characters having to come to terms with their powers and themselves whilst also having to deal with a cyborg unit the humans have put together to wipe them off the face of the earth. Both bad guys and good guys are given a lot of fleshing out over the 6 episode run (which is very impressive given the short length of the series) and there are some really great scenes with various characters trying to discover their purpose in the world and coming to terms with what it is they have to do. I genuinely cared about all the characters by the end of the show and was quite satisfied with the ending.

The music in the show is great and serves to make all the action and drama seem all the more engaging. And the voice acting is good for both English and Japanese.

Overall I'd recommend Towanoquon to any anime fan out there. It has some slight pacing issues with the story but things do pull together nicely in the end and the action and animation are just great from start to finish. Big thumbs up from me for this one. I say buy it!

Thanks for reading!

DeeJay says:
Towanoquon was released in Japanese theatres as 6 movies, so nothing was cut down, nor were there meant to be more episodes. The storyline is patchy because, well thats just studio bones for you, they produce shows that look great but lack in other areas; FMA not withstanding of course.

Given its plot and storyline issues this is pretty far from a 5 star anime for me. Worth a look if your just after an Xman style anime that does nothing new. 3 stars at best.

Oh, thank you for clearing that up, and apologies for misleading people there about that. Hmmm I still stand by my score though. I think the characters and animation are just great and although things weren't put together perfectly story wise, it did all in all turn into (in my opinion) a very engaging show. But of course all opinions are valid and I can see why you would minus a few marks for story. Thank you for the comment and thank you for giving the review a read. ^__^
