Customer Review

on 23 June 2006
Atwood had been looking into the Grace Marks case for years before she actuallt wrote this novel, and the depth of her interest really shows. She creates a believable and appealing character - both innocent and knowing - out of the biographical sources, at the same time spinning quite a tense mystery out of the crimes she was thought to have committed. The real joy of this book springs from the combination of the two: historical authenticity and psychological insight married to a carefully structured mystery. Without both elements the book would either have been insubstantial, on the one hand, or too long and slow on the other.
