When I bought this book, I suffered from borderline high blood pressure and was slightly overweight. The book is very informative and easy to read, despite the many scientific research studies it includes. The author - one of the leading US American cardiologists - looks at heart disease in a holistic manner and advises treatment in several areas - nutrition, exercise, relaxation techniques, your environment, relationships etc.

After I finished reading this book, I started eating fat-free or very low fat dairy instead of reduced fat dairy, much less meat (even lean meat eaten regularly is not great for someone with heart disease), started doing yoga regularly, and try to have more than my 5 portions of fruit and veg every day.

What I liked very much about this book is the way the author includes some of his personal experiences. His style of writing is at times quite personal, e.g. when he gives his readers glimpses into his family live and when he talks about his love of chocolate. He has learned to be happy with one piece of the best quality dark chocolate every day and savours this little treat. This technique works! Instead of trying to deny myself chocolate and other treats for weeks and then eat a whole bar of chocolate in one go, I now also savour one piece of dark chocolate (Lindt is my favourite) every day and don't need more than that anymore.

The book contains plenty of nutritious recipes. The ones I have tried so far were easy to make and tasted very good. Sometimes you might wish to add a few more spices or herbs, depending on your taste, but it does show that low-fat healthy food can be delicious.

After a couple of months eating and living more towards the healthier end of the spectrum, my blood pressure has normalised and I slowly loose my excess weight - without medication or dieting, just by following the recommendations in this book.
The book also contains a DVD with meditations and breathing exercises. I can fully recommend this book, because it has helped me to get healthier again.
