Written by an Oxford undergraduate in 1928 this book has stood the test of time remarkably well.Quality writing that perfectly exposes the injustices of many aspects of life for women in the early 20th century.Married with family, naval officer Charles Wilson finds himself ashore on 3 months sick leave on the island of Malta. He becomes enmeshed in the life of a Russian emigre community where Charles the cold fish inevitably finds himself warming to the quietly understated charms of one Maria Ivanova. What follows can only be described as a spiral of unstoppable events with tragic consequences. A hauntingly well written book that made for compelling reading and likewise must have made them sit up and take notice in 1928. Thankyou to Maia Press for unearthing this treasure.
