3.0 out of 5 stars A good album, but not the great one that others see., 18 April 2009
This review is from: Asia (Audio CD)
I'm going to be seeing Asia at the Cambridge Rock Festival in August so I thought I'd better do my research on them. I'd heard 'Heat of the Moment' before and liked it but never ever really delved deaper into their back catlogue. So I bought this album and 'Phoenix' (which I will be reviewing soon) so I could get a good retrospective of this line-up of Asia. Unfortunatley, this album isn't really THAT great. While there are some good tracks, the rest of the sogns are pretty boring and standard. It's not a horrible album, it's enjoyable enough, I just find that it's pretty overrated and nowhere near as good as other reviews make it out to be. Anyway, time for a track by track runthrough:

Heat of the Moment - Yeah, this song's a classic. You can't really knock it at all, as it's just one of those untouchable songs that you can't dislike. Great tune! 9/10

Only Time Will Tell - I think this was another quite big single too. It's a bit ballady and cheesey, not really my thing. It's quite catchy but I find it quite sickening, oh well, it's listenable to. 6/10

Sole Survivor - This another one of the good songs on this album. It's got a good chorus that is easy to sing to and is very catchy. Not a bad song at all. 8/10

One Step Closer - This song is really strange. I find it quite bad to be honest, I don't know what it is. I think it's the really tinny guitar sound and the cheesey keyboards. I wouldn't really recomend this song to be honest. 5/10

Time Again - This song is a bit of an improvement on the previous one with it's pounding bassline and striking keyboards. I think that John Wetton's voice kinda sounds like Phil Lynott's in the verses which is pretty cool. It's not a bad song at all, and has quite a catchy chorus. 7/10

Wildest Dreams - Another ok song. The keyboards are quite nice but the lyrics leave a lot to be desired. To be honest, none of Asia's lyrics are that inspiring and it's definatley one thing that could be improved overall on the album. 7/10

Without You - Another ballad, but this one's not so bad. It's quite anthemic and I imagine that it would be good live. The vocal harmonies are pretty good and there is a nice, melodic solo towards the end. 7/10

Cutting it Fine - This is another one of the stronger songs on the album. It's very catchy and has some good underlying guitar, keyboard and bass lines. A very good song but the long instrumental section at the end is pretty annoying. 8/10

Here Comes the Feeling - The last song on the album isn't at all bad. It's quite catchy and has a good chorus. The synth and guitar work here is taseful and makes for a pretty good end to a mixed album. 7/10

Overall, this album is listenable to but it's not great. There are some good songs as I've said but there are also some boring ones. It's worth buying for the small prince asked on here but don't expect too much. Also, I don't understand the cover, it looks like a Pokemon!
