4.0 out of 5 stars Great portable Mic but not great when on Power Supply, 5 July 2011
This review is from: Zoom H2 Handy Recorder with 4GB Card (Electronics)
I just bought the H2 for use as an external sound recorder for a wedding I was videoing with two video cameras. I placed the H2 recording from all four microphones in 2 channel mode, at the front of the church and also on the top table during the speeches. It performed well, although I wish I had set the mic gain to High instead of Mid, as the recording level did end up being a tad quiet for video playback use. I ended up using Audacity free software to amplify the gain afterwards. That aside, the quality of the sound recording is exceptional. If you listen through the H2 headphone jack, it is clear and without hiss of distortion. The battery life seems good as well.

It's great that the .WAV files can be converted to .MP3 on the device itself, handy if you need to free up some memory whilst on location. The surround sound 4 channel recording mode give you separate audio files for front and back microphones which give you loads of options on which sound source is best or which can be tweaked during editing.

The downside, is that when the H2 is connected to the external power supply that comes with the product, there is a very noticeable warbling sound in the background of all recordings made while attached to power. I have read other reviews where this has been a reported problem. As I only intend this to be a portable recording device, I am unlikely to need to use the power supply, so for me this issue isn't affecting my choice.

I tested the H2 on my Apple Mac Pro, as a USB attached microphone, for things like podcasts and recording voice overs. It appears that there is a lag between speaking and hearing the sound on the system. Not sure if this is related to the H2 or the Mac, so would be unfair to blame the H2. Just something you may want to be aware of if you intend on using this as a PC/Mac microphone. I got round this be listening to my own voice through the H2 headphone jack, and not the system speakers.

I would highly recommend this product based on the quality of the mics, and the sound quality for the price. The build quality of the housing is cheap and plastic, but for the price, I wasn't expecting more.

It is a USB device. I would expect a small delay.

How much delay do you observe ?

A perceptable delay is somewhere between 1/10th and 1/20th of a second.
