This review is from: Lowepro Fastpack 200 Quick Access Backpack for SLR Kit and General Gear - Black (Camera)
I'm a bit puzzled when the basic model in a range is slated for not having the GTI go-faster bits.
When I first started hill walking, small to medium ruck sacks did not have sternum straps and did not need them because the strap spacing was properly designed for light loads. Waist straps came in later to help give your shoulders a break when carrying heavy loads, and for stability when scrambling.
I gave my Lowepro Fastpack 200 a good try out yesterday on a 4+ hour walk around the Manx green lanes and moorland. I used it as a day sack to carry a fairly light load - DSLR plus 2 lenses, waterproof and packed lunch. For this level of use I have no complaints - it is properly designed for my frame which is pretty average. The straps did not slip of my shoulder. It did not move around on my back any more than any daysack does. It did not make my back sweat too much. It did not get uncomfortable although the back pad did begin to feel just a touch flat and unyielding against my spine - but nothing serious: I was being critical.
I just wish I had bought something like this when I bought my DSLR. Instead I persisted in using an awkward shoulder bag. Would I use it for serious mountaineering? No, I would move up the range. Would I use it for a heavy set of pro gear? No. But for easy to middling days out it with "amateur" gear and for something to throw in the car or take on public transport - perfect. For this usage the absence of extraneous straps flapping about and catching on things is a bonus. I should have bought one years ago because on too many occasions the DSLR has just seemed too big and heavy and I have taken my compact and of course regretted it later. The method of access is quick and easy. No more digging through waterproofs, apples and drink bottles to find the camera, or having an awkward shoulder bag banging against my hip. For once my wife did not complain about me stopping to take pictures because it was quick and easy.
At Amazon's price it was a bargain and totally fit for the purpose for which it was intended. Read the spec., and if it does not meet your needs move up or across the range. Lowepro have a bewildering range of choices, after all, but all designed for specific modes of use.

My passport says "British Islands, Isle of Man". We are integrated into the UK VAT system so the cost of goods is the same as in the UK and we can use amazon.co.uk as if we were resident in the UK (apart from non- Royal Mail postage costs).
