1.0 out of 5 stars I would not recommend it, 5 Dec. 2009
Viviscal claims to be 22% protein, which sounds good, but let's do the calculation. 500 mg per tablet, two tablets per day, 22% protein, that's 0.22 g of protein per day. Now women's Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for protein is 46 g per day. So, at the recommended dose, Viviscal provides less that 1/200 of the RDA.
Remember that, before being absorbed by the body, dietary protein gets broken down to amino acids and very short chains of two or three amino acids called peptides. So it's not useful to think of active proteins or essential proteins, just protein. Viviscal, used as directed, is not a significant source of dietary protein.

Viviscal claims to provide Vitamin C and silica in significant quantities, but compare the price of Viviscal with a regular multivitamin. Does it look good value?

In October 2008, the UK Advertising Standards Authority looked at adverts for Viviscal and found that they breached CAP Code clauses on substantiation and truthfulness. They told the suppliers of Viviscal "to amend future ads to avoid any implication that Viviscal could prevent hair loss or promote hair growth and to ensure that medicinal claims were not made in connection with Viviscal".

Edit: In May 2011, the ASA upheld another complaint about another Viviscal ad, which "implied Viviscal could improve thinning hair and reduce hair loss", finding that this too breached CAP Code clauses on Substantiation and Truthfulness.

Hi,

What did you take Viviscal for? Did you take it as a protein dietry supplement or to encourage hair growth?

your calculation is wrong and does not add up.

Jan Fraser says:
The marketers of Viviscal have made claims such as:

"The key ingredient is the exclusive AminoMar C™ - a rich protein compound of marine extracts blended with organic, soluble silica and fortified with vitamin C. Amino acids are the basic structural building units of proteins and are essential in the formation of the hair structure. Viviscal provides those essential nutrients to nourish your hair naturally from within."

and

"AminoMar C™ Marine Complex- provides the essential proteins needed to nourish hair loss and promote existing hair growth."

However, used as recommended, Viviscal does not provide dietarily significant quantities of protein/amino acids.

Jan Fraser says:
No, I do not work for a rival company. Please also see my review of Nourkrin.

I have exactly the same beef with the company that the Advertising Standards Authority has.

Did you actually use it? It seems to me you haven't, indeed, why would you, based on your detailed assumptions?

HI. I was looking for some clear comments and came across your message. I want so much to ask about vitamins, whether, if it will help future hair loss/thin/, how about the body to manage absorbing all those vitamins/, as after curtain age our stomach/pancreas/lack of enzimes/ are so weak to do the job. So I am still lost here, and thought your message was more interesting than two words.
