Exceptional, empathic story-writing,

I loved this book.
The story about Moritz was extremely gripping and well-researched. A great way of discovering some of Russia's history, as well as of the First World War itself. The story was detailed, and totally mesmerising. The theme of love providing the reason to continue in the most adverse of circumstances, being stronger than everything, was truly magical and really brought home how love really is all that matters in this life.
In terms of the story about Leo - having relatively recently been bereaved, I felt the description of some of the emotions and stages Leo went through to be the most accurate and explicit portrayl of grief that I have ever read. The fact that you do nearly lose your mind, lose all sense of perspective, feel your loved one everywhere, find it hard to relate to everyday life and want to retreat, the feeling that no one else understands and that you are expected to "act normally" as soon as possible. Danny Scheinmann captures all that exceptionally well.
Overall, absolutely fantastic, and highly recommended reading.
