The greatest true adventure story ever told,
This review is from: The Kon-Tiki Expedition (Paperback)
Since I found it as a teenager in 1964, I've loved this book without reserve. Everything about it is perfect. The clean engaging prose which pulls you right in; the fantastic notion behind the voyage, the bravery, conviction and ingenuity with which Heyerdahl and his comrades pull it off, the string of unforgettable scenes as they bob across the sparkling Pacific.... I just return to the tale again and again. But the book's real power and magic lie in the way it so compulsively takes the reader back to the Stone Age, when mankind lay in the hands of Mother Nature, was moved by her every whim, and was but one component in a vaster tapestry. Coming right after the manmade horrors of WW2 this wonderful (and huge-selling) book proved conclusively that, allied with the natural world instead of fighting his own kind, Man can turn with the wind, open his heart - and reach Paradise.
