A phenomenal live performer!,
This review is from: Mystery White Boy/Live in Chicago [CD + DVD] (Audio CD)
I dont usually write reviews about albums on here but I had to express my views on this product. As you know, in the studio, Jeff Buckley wrote and recorded many fine pieces of material in his short-lived career. To be honest, I dont think he ever wrote a bad song. The covers he recorded could be classed as "better" than their originals and that may be a bold statement, but I stand by my words.
From the live perspective of his work, there is not a single let-down. Armed with talented musicians Michael Tighe (rhythm guitar), Matt Johnson (drums) and Mick Grondahl (bass guitar), Jeff captivates what it means to "giving it your all" on stage. Often adding in little improvisations before and during songs the other musicians have the uncanny ability to navigate where he is heading and follow their leader. Their tightness is magnificent so there's definately chemistry within all of them.
As for the songs, "Mojo Pin" is a real ear-opener with its quiet/loud buildup dynamics which includes Jeff screaming "black beuty" on the last chorus so much that you think his vocal chords are going to come out at any second. Songs like "Grace", "Last Goodbye", "So Real" and "Lilac Wine" are everything you'd expect them to be and the MC5 cover of "Kick Out The Jams" and "Eternal Life" will leave you breathless. And to end the night, "Hallelujah" is brought out to soothe the audience and the listener from what was a powerful and emotional gig.
So there you have it. BUY THIS ALBUM/CD!!!!!!!!!!
