Try to hear one if you can,
This review is from: Logitech Squeezebox Boom (Electronics)
I'll keep this short and sweet as there are plenty of informative reviews already.
But the sound: it really is as surprisingly good as most of these reviews say. They're doctoring the sound a fair bit to give it more oomph (web search and you'll references to papers in which they discuss it) -- but because 'loudness' buttons and the like are out of fashion these days they don't talk about it.
The net effect is that the Boom has a much larger sound than it has any right to (it's smaller than you think if you haven's seen one in the flesh, trust me :-). The oomph runs out as you wind the volume sky high, as the firmware ramps down the low-end augmentation, but you have to expect that -- it would tear itself apart (well, damage speakers part and distort like crazy) if it didn't do that.
I have one in our bathroom (with the low voltage wire disappearing into the wall and reappearing in the loft where the transformer can stay safely dry), and it's the business. I listen to a lot of music and don't enjoy it if the sound is grotty. The Boom's sound is rich and satisfying, and that's before you do a double-take and realise how small the beast is that's producing that sound.
It has a set of preset buttons on the front which also wake the beast, so switching on and playing a particular play list (say, random songs for example) involves a single button press. Neat.
