Summerslam 2004,well summerslam being summerslam means or guarantees that there should be some matches that slap the taste out of your mouth, however in the case of 2004 we had a good summerslam but nothing more but some of what happened that night shall live long in the brain and that factor can't be dismissed.
The event opened with a fairly decent six man tag team match, the dudley boyz with spike went up against rey mysterio, paul london and brian kidman, when you consider the quality of the athletes here then it isnt unfair to say that this was a letdown but it didnt last long, had a great finisher and some good moves included but should have been better.
Next up was a 'till death do us part' match, basically the winner between kane and matt hardy who were engaged (pun) in a war for a chunk of 2004,would marry lita.
This match was a so so match for me,and leaned more against a poor match that good, there was again some good moves, but it just didnt work so on we go.
Next up was the first in a best of 5 series where the winner would dance away with the united states championship, booker T and john cena were the rivals and they did a good job in getting the crowd going and providing a good contest with near falls, skill, pace and precision, certainly the best match of the night up to that juncture.
The WWE intercontiental championship was up next in a triple threat enviroment, the champ edge defended it against batista and chris jericho, this was a very good match, almost superb, dear falls all over the place, people going for pins and submissions left, right and centre, people trying to profit when others place their finisher move, you get the picture, this was a very good match and all three men impressed with their desire and attitude.
Next up was another great match and a repeat of their match 4 months earlier, kurt angle against eddie guerrero, this match may not have been as good as their wrestlemania encounter but it was still excellent, neither men afforded their oppenent too many opportunities and was a very close and cagey affair that had people on their feet and going bananas, very good, hard to follow.
The match that did follow was pretty terrible, come on,lets be honest, triple H against eugene, how the heck does that look to the doubters of WWE,eugene pranced about and took the biscuit with his stupid antics and triple looked a bit ashamed at times but the man is a true professional and took this as he does with any other match,it seemed to last forver at times as eugene tried to steal the limelight,to be fair he mounted some good moves but one could tell triple was allowing him too dictate the match, but in the end juctice prevailed and a sense of normality was restored but this was something of a waste of time for all involved and yes i am including eugene in that.
A diva dodgeball match was up next and lasted a minute or so,wow ,aint we lucky, actually we were as this was a joke.
The World heavyweight title was up next as the undertaker went up against the champion JBL,firstly this match ended cheaply and that point wasnt wasted on a frustrated crowd, the aftermath of that was good though, the match itself was a mixture of good all the way down to dull and draining,so a title match not fit for a king then.
The same cant be said of the main event proper, where the WWE champion chris benoit went up against randy orton who had a very good year, was it set to get better? watch and see, this was a terrific match and both men deserve all the plaudits, the ending for me was blinding and bold but a sign of what was to come,a glorious way to end a mixed bag of average to brilliant, well nothings perfect hey!
