There is no doubting that 'Book + Art', as it's title suggests, is both practical and beautiful. Dorothy Simpson Krause gives an in-depth, thorough grounding in a wide range of techniques, and the book is split roughly half and half between decorative and bookbinding techniques. (By the way I have unprettily used the word 'techniques' twice within one sentence, you will gather that this is a technique-rather-than-project book.) The photo illustrations are lavish, full-colour and plentiful throughout, both in step-by-step stages and aspirational examples.
Simpson Krause is a mixed media artist, and therefore the techniques she describes are those that she uses and is familiar with. If you wish to make mixed media artists' books, this book is the only guide you will need. It is interesting, regardless of your own preferred medium. However, if mixed media is not to your taste, you may prefer Alisa Golden's 'Expressive Handmade Books' for creative bookbinding techniques combined with a more open interpretation of what an artists' book can be, ideas on inspiration, design and content as well as practicalities.
This is a practical and beautiful book, and I think the right artist/reader will love it as much as I had hoped to.
