This review is from: Stephen Hero (Paperback)
Thoroughly readable edition of this fascinating large fragment by Joyce, apparently written between the ages of 19 and 24. The book covers Stephen Daedalus's university days, and is clearer and more direct than the book it was swallowed up by, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. Joyce hadn't yet refined the mode of representation for which he became famous - most strikingly in Dubliners, it is about leaving certain things unsaid. If you admire this elliptical approach, perhaps Stephen Hero will leave you cold; however, for anyone trying to understand the young Joyce (as artist), I would recommend it together with the OUP edition of his essays and articles, entitled Occasional, Critical, and Political Writing.
