Stop the Press! Outstanding Historical Production.,
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Stephen Fry & The Gutenberg Press [DVD] (2008) (DVD)
Well, I wonder if anyone short of Stephen Fry could make a relatively dry topic come to life and turn it into a wonderful tour through time and geography. In the year 2000, an American TV program asked the question, "What was the most important invention of the second millennium?" The team of scientists, historians and other scholars named the Gutenberg Press as the most important. The producers and Mr. Fry tell the story of Gutenberg's invention by recreating a fairly accurate replica. The DVD brings to life Gutenberg's outstanding contribution to European and world civilizations. What a delight. My 16 year old granddaughter watched the DVD with me and was astounded to discover that the term "press" used in reference to printed media such as newspapers and books was derived from the mechanical "press" used to imprint type and ink to paper. And she has selected the theme of paper making shown in the DVD for a school project. This is an example of visual arts at its best. Thank you Mr. Fry, craftsmen and producer!
I hope this is released for American audiences soon. I bought the UK DVD and watched on my universal DVD player in the US. It was worth every penny (or pound).
