Customer Review

on 7 March 2008
I have been a Nightwish fan since Oceanborn. Their discography has been quite a mixture of highs and lows and Dark Passion Play is unfortunately as low as you can get.

No problem with the new singer she's the typical female singer you get nowadays in a number of metal and gothic bands.

The album starts off quite promising with the longest track on the cd "The Poet and The Pendulum" until the growling vocals kick in and spoil things after about 8 minutes. After that the track tamely slowws up and fades away with softer vocals but by that time the damage is well and truly done.

"Bye Bye Beautiful" is a typical mid tempo Nightwish song and perhaps the best on the album.

"Amaranth" sort of catchy but more of a pointless filler in my opinion.

"Cadence of her last Breath" ups the tempo a little but again a nothing song and just a filler.

"Master Passion Control" the worst song Nightwish have ever recorded it's pure death metal - horrendous.

"EVA" A slow boring ballad to follow the growls of the previous track and clearly Nightwish have lost the plot entirely now.

"Sahara" A pacier song that meanders along but fairly pointlessly leaving no lasting impression of merit.

"Whoever Brings The Night" A slight improvement with this faster more rockier song - fairly short but to be honest it's pretty much another unmemorable filler.

"For the Heart I Once Had" Another slow song dominated by the female vocals and not suitable for a symphonic metal band - quite awful.

"The Islander" Can this album get any worse oh yes it just has with this ridiculous folk song more suited to the soundtrack of Robin Hood. Penned by the bassist which is where all Nightwish's problems lie. Since he joined it's been a steady downhill slope. Why can't he stick to playing the bass.

"Last of the Wilds" This is a decent instrumental sort of a Scottish jig if you like that sort of thing.

"7 Days to the Wolves" Another mid paced ordinary song which is yet another example of the poor unimaginative song writing on this album.

"Meadows of Heaven" Surprise surprise a slow boring ballad to close the album with some choirs and orchestration.

So there we have it a quite awful effort from the new Nightwish line up. There have been many excellent "metal" cds released this year but this is not one of them. Poor quality song writing, absolutely no momentum, boring and far too diverse - Nightwish seem to have no idea which direction to take. Sadly a total waste of money avoid this album unless you are an absolute die hard fan.
