This review is from: Original Album Series: Little Feat / Sailin' Shoes / Dixie Chicken / Feats Don't Fail Me Now / The Last Record Album (Audio CD)
The band's first two albums here sound like a strange derivative of The Band, CSN&Y and Dr John and if they had stayed with the line-up that recorded them we may well never of heard much more of Little Feat. As it was, the addition of Paul Barrere on guitar and Sam Clayton on percussion and the replacement of Estrada on bass by Kenny Gradney for their third album Dixie Chicken created a much tighter and focussed unit and started a sequence of four top class albums (the last three that are included here plus the missing Time Loves A Hero from 1977) with a unique sound which will be identifiable forever as Little Feat in their prime. The sequence was ended by the sad untimely demise of the great Lowell George although 1979's Down on the Farm (again not included here) also bears some of his hallmark input. This set would have merited 5 stars from me if their unremarkable 1971 debut Little Feat had been replaced by Time Loves A Hero (interestingly exactly what the Original Album series did with the equivalent set from label and touring mates, the Doobie Brothers, which contains their albums 2 to 6) and it would also have given us an entire set of five minature Neon Park album covers (which are almost worth the money alone)! This package is great value nonetheless and an indispensible record of a great band.
