the greatest female voice youve never heard of,
This review is from: Call of the Wild (Audio CD)
amount of tracks :11
you think youve heard great girl singers? you havent heard nothing till youve heard this gal! very curious that she never broke through and became a hell of a lot more recognized. i think this is down to a couple of factors which i'll list here
firstly she was around in the mid-80's big hair/glam rock world which was a really male dominated scene and aimed mainly at the then plentiful real rock chicks (great days eh boys!). acts like bon jovi, motley crue, whitesnake etc were the big guns and the industry was right behind them. lee, being a rock chick herself, was always gonna play second fiddle to these acts simply because, being female, she just wasnt as marketable.
secondly, a lot of her music was pretty standard, of its time, big hair rock which had much of the horrendous 80's production we've now all come to hate so much and i feel that perhaps this incredible voice was wasted on most of it.
cos boy oh boy could this girl sing! - ive picked this album to review out of the 3 or 4 ive heard because of one AMAZING song that highlights this voice like no other
the track in question is 'barely holding on' which is, for me, without question, THE greatest rock ballad ever recorded. the power, expression and anquish in lees voice here just has to be heard to be believed. in fact i would say that this is the greatest vocal performance by a female of any song EVER! - dont believe me? well then, youd better go buy this album, turn it up, and find out for yourself. its the reason why i give this album 5 stars. nothing else on it comes close in terms of quality but this track is just so essential that it warrants the rating.
girl power? yeah, i hate that term too, created as it was by a bunch of businessmen to promote their worthless act. but if girl=power is what you want then this is IT! i heard that lee is now fronting a jazzy type act which means we'll never hear her letting rip again like she does here. so what we have is a bit of a wasted talent, criminally overlooked and under-rated. a contender for the best female rock vocalist ever.
