The great advantage Szarkowski had over other writers is his ability to communicate in understandable terms his love of images and his knowledge of the subject. This is an enthusiastic book! Each image gets a page to itself and faces comments which can include biography, thematic, cultural or historical overview or comments on the image. He writes engagingly and often with humour. He tends to be rather less critical when dealing with photographers who at the time of writing (nearly 40 years ago) were still living and might sue! A delightful book and a good read.
