As a long time Makeba fan I purchsed this album with a hope of finding a few unknown gems. Alas, I was let down. This album appears to be tribute to Miriam who died last year whilst peforming in in Italy. The logical thing to do with a tribute album would be to do a greatest hits album (already been done), to release an album of unknown works (unlikely), or to issue a chronology (preferable). None of these have been done. Instead we have a mishmosh of newer, overproduced tracks, one or two of her well known tracks and a couple of tracks that are generally not available. There is no order and no reason to the track listings.
Personally, if I were to buy a Makeba album, I would go for 'Mama Africa - The very best of Miriam Makeba'. A well rounded and thoroughly enjoyable compilation.
I would have given this album 2 stars but, as it's Miriam makeba and I'm biased, so it gets an extra star!!
