5.0 out of 5 stars 4 disks of superb Agatha Christie entertainment, 14 Aug. 2007

This review is from: Agatha Christie's Poirot: The Collection 4 [DVD] (DVD)
To many people David Suchet is the ultimate Poirot - I agree, he is perfect as Agatha Christie's Belgum detective. This 4 disk set contains some of the short story adaptions as well as the longer adaptions of Agatha Christie's novels. I must admit I prefer the adaptions of the novels rather than the short stories. 4 novels Hercule Poirot's Christmas, Hickory Dickory Dock, Murder On The Links and Dumb Witness as well as several short story adaptions. This set has all the regular supporting characters Captain Hastings, Miss Lemon and Chief Inspector Japp (who are sadly missing in the later episodes). These stories are lighter than the later adaptions where Poirot's character is alot darker. I am looking forward to the new adaptions which are being filmed - I am reliably informed are Mrs McGinty's Dead and Dead Man's Folly. Lets hope Japp, Hastings and Miss lemon are bought back for them.

Without doubt one of the most sensible reviews that I have read on Amazon ! All I would say is that Dead Man's Folly appears not be to in the pipeline - but Cat Among The Pigeons is being done instead along with Appointment With Death , Murder On The Orient Express and yes of course Mrs McGinty's Dead . I can find no evidence that Pauline Moran , Philip Jackson and Hugh Fraser are being recalled to play Miss Lemon , Chief Inspector Japp and Captain Hastings . The novel & short story adapatations on this set are first class pieces of work and are superior to the depressing turn that Poirot has taken since 2003 . As I never tire of saying when a series moves from being entertaining to trying shock tactics and the traditional cast are axed then it goes into decline - just look at the Carry On films in the mid / late 1970's . Once again well done to the reviewer for writing a sound evaluation of the Poirot DVD's in question . Hercule Poirot's Christmas is a superb treat for the festive season - I dread to think how they would have messed it up had it been filmed in 2006 ! Just look at the nasty Taken At The Flood ....
Instead of George's making the tisane Miss Lemon could have been doing that while Japp could have been the investigating officer ( far better than the non-entity they used in Taken At The Flood ) and there could have been a few scenes with Poirot & Hastings mulling the case over in Taken At The Flood . It would have rather like it was in the 1990's and so far better if the producers had the wit to realise that the fans would have loved it & the gist of the novel could have been superbly conveyed while using Poirot's friends as was the case with the excellent Evil Under The Sun ( the ratings were superb as they were with Dumb Witness , Murder On The Links etc ) . The shows on this set prove how to get an adaptation of a Poirot done to perfection for television . Well done David Suchet - his performance is as ever excellent which the reviewer wisely points out !
