One of the most influential musicians of the 60s,
This review is from: GP / Grievous Angel (Audio CD)
Outside of the well known figures from 60s American music, there are two genuinely influential figures - both working inside the traditional music camp and both with a foot in the post hippie rock music camp. They are Ry Cooder and Gram Parsons.
Fortunately Ry is still around but Gram is not. However, his musical influence casts a very long shadow. This compilation of his two solo albums shows exactly why.
I really do not believe that the country rock area would have ever grown so large in the 1970s without GP's groundbreaking music. Right from the International Submarine Band, the Burritos, Byrds and these albums he helped create the atmosphere where everyone from the Eagles, Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris and even the Rolling Stones could go country.
The alternative to the sour fag end of the 60s dream was the music that GP, Ry Cooder and the Band were exploring in the 1968-1972 period. The music that set the scene for the whole 70s LA thing, along with the singer songwriters like Joni Mitchell, Carole King, James Taylor et al.
Anyone who wants to see how the 70s soft rock/country rock scene started needs to hear these albums.
