This review is from: Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag (Xbox One) (Video Game)
Had this bought for me as a gift and truthfully did not expect to like it as I enjoyed the novelty and uniqueness of the first Assassins Creed but did not like any subsequent ones that I felt were unoriginal and tedious.
Imagine my surprise when I reluctantly tried it and of the six launch games I own this has now became my most played title, I cannot get enough of it!. The world is very absorbing and encourages you to explore and graphically, although one of the first next gen games and therefore not mind blowing, are very nice indeed. Gameplay is good with very few control and camera issues and the 'missions' are detailed and enjoyable.
The game is set in 1700's caribbean, a time where the rule of the seas is contested between the fleets of different nations and pirates who regard themselves as independent rather than criminals. The premise of the game is that of accessing the memories of Edward Kenway though a system called Animus, though the current day parts are small and infrequent to avoid interrupting the theme and feel of the main game. The main storyline is that of Edward Kenway and his adventures around the caribbean which I will not go into to avoid possible spoilers but the main quest line is entertaining and well produced. Alongside this are LOTS of side missions, collectables and exploration opportunities. There are also upgrades for Kenway and also for his ship which can be obtained through collecting materials such as wood, metal and cloth etc. and also through items gained from hunting both on land and at sea.
As you progress through the game, further features are added such as the ability to manage a fleet and to make one of the islands a home for Kenway and his band of pirates.
The characters in game are very good and individual making you empathise with them in a lot of cases as many have 'personality' and can be likeable.
This is a fantastic game for those looking for a stealthy open world experience PLUS you get to live that childhood dream of being a pirate!!
Games like this will always get mixed reviews as you either love them or hate them but I can assure you that if the stealth, open world and adventure are your thing, you should love this.
Five stars from me.
