Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I am so pleased with these spikes. I have a garden full of tubs and wanted something that would stop everything dying if I go away for a weekend. I'd been saving a variety of bottles of different shapes/sizes in anticipation of their arrival so as soon as they came I filled them with water and gave them a try. The bottles I used ranged from small drinks bottles from fizzy drinks to a large 2 litre Coke bottle. The screw fitting wouldn't work with a squash bottle I'd saved but that's no reflection on the product - it was clearly a non-standard size and everything else worked well.
The instructions say that you might want to make a small hole in the bottom of the larger bottles to prevent air locks. I ignored this initially and saw the bottles start to collapse inwards! One small hole later and the bottle started to drain so I could see it was working. You have to play around with it as in hindsight I think the holes were slightly too large - which causes fun and games when refilling the bottles but a bit of tape over the hole has solved that issue for now. The smallest bottles (the personal drinks sized bottles) didn't need air holes and took a day to empty.
The spikes come with a small rubber ring that you can use to adjust the flow rate from the spikes. At its widest setting (with the hole totally open) the 2 litre bottle drained in about 5 hours. I'm playing around with adjusting the flow rate and a 1 litre bottle has lasted a day on the lowest setting - with the hole totally covered so it basically just drips.
The spikes are well packaged and a donation is currently being made to Oxfam for every pack sold. The cardboard sleeve on the back also suggests that you tear it up and use it for compost. Not that it affects the product at all but I thought it was a nice touch and in keeping with the eco nature of the product. The sleeve also says that you could add a liquid feed to the water. I suppose that might be obvious but again I thought it was useful information and a nice touch.
I would highly recommend these to anyone looking for a cheap and eco-friendly watering solution - it's a really good and effective product.
