Textures are back with their latest release to show the world that technical, polyrhythmic madness can go hand in hand with writing great songs. The one issue I've always had with technical metal is that, while it's awesome to listen to, it all too easily begins to feel like a technical exercise rather than music. Thus I was a little skeptical about Textures.
But it was not deserved! I don't think I've ever found a band so technical and yet so musical at the same time. This band write SONGS.
The album opens with the menacing and energetic "Old Days Born Anew", a journey from blistering speed and metal riffage all the way through to synth drenched moments of amazing release, and back again, and closes with "To Erase a Lifetime", a reflective almost ballad-like song. Both make use of contrast, something which I think identifies Textures as a band.
I really won't spend long reviewing, as the music honestly speaks for itself. If you're a fan of technical metal or even not, you'd be wise to check this out!
