This review is from: Royal Navy Way of Leadership (Hardcover)
I am not, generally, in the habit of reading books on leadership. But I would urge anyone with a similar prejudice to put it aside for this volume. First of all, Mr. St. George is a wonderful writer whose prose is worth reading no matter his subject. And here he has found himself with one crackerjack leadership tale to tell. Banish all thoughts of cliched, aphoristic check-lists of how "to get the most from your team." The Royal Navy has had centuries to grapple with questions of tradition and innovation, structure and flexibility, on a scale that ranges from an office to an empire, and the stories and lessons Mr. St. George draws from this extraordinary history serve as nothing short of a masterclass on the subject of leadership. It is fascinating for its own sake, plenty of food for thought and -- I can't believe I'm saying this -- actually useful for anyone who leads or is led, in any walk of life. I suppose that is not surprising. Good ideas, honed by trial and error over countless generations, with stakes as high as life and death, tend to be worth our attention. And though very few of us will be rulers of the Queen's Navy, attention should be paid to this remarkable book.
