I loved this story of a girl and her horse set in the last days of the Roman empire. Minna is a young British girl whose family work in the vica attached to the Roman fort of Othona near Camulodunum. She is an appealing character - in love with horses and freedom, and also with Theodosius, the young commander of the garrison. The drama in which she and her brother (and his dog) are involved makes for a story you can't put down.
K.M.Peyton has such a light touch. Her descriptions of the sea shore and wildlife of the Essex marshes are beautiful, and she manages to convey a sense of the historical period without cluttering up the narrative with too much detail.
