A fascinating account of Raleigh's life,
This review is from: Sir Walter Raleigh: in Life and Legend (Hardcover)
I began this account of Walter Raleigh's life thinking from the reviews that it might be too academic for me but was pleasantly surprised by how easy it was to read. The authors succeeded in taking me back to Tudor/Stuart times, in paricular the mindsets of Raleigh, the monarchs and their courtiers. Notes on the sources/ alternative views were given at the bottom of each page and there were extensive quotes from contemporary correspondence with some explanation in case you did not understand Elizabethan English! I particulary liked the Chapter on Raleigh's poetry and the context in which it was written. My only criticism was the length of text( two chapters)devoted to Raleigh's 'History of the World'. Overall very informative and interesting!
