3.0 out of 5 stars Scott: The (Incomplete) Collection 1967-1970, 4 Jun. 2013
This review is from: Scott - The Collection 1967-1970 (Audio CD)
First, to explain the three star rating: Scott is brilliant. The recorded material rates five stars (I'd give it ten, if possible). This box set collection rates one star, however. This averages out to three stars, which I think is more than generous, especially considering that these five CDs are all still available individually.

Why such a low rating for the set? I'll answer that with my own question: Why on earth go to the trouble of collecting the music on Scott Walker's first five LPS if you're not going to include the rest of what he recorded during this time period? Why on earth were his singles (i.e., "Lights of Cincinnati") and B-sides (i.e., "The Plague") from this time not included? It would have taken very little effort to do so and given Scott fans a real reason to pick up this set. Any Scott fan worth his salt already has the first five Scott LPs on CD. The title of the set (SCOTT: The Collection 1967-1970) tacitly implies that the box set covers and includes everything Scott recorded during this time, so why not go the small extra distance and actually make it so?

This is a prime example of what happens when bean counters (accountants) run record companies and not people with a passion for music.

Mulch this set and start over. And get Scott fan David Bowie (or Brian Eno) to write the liner notes.

David says:
In referring to "the rest of what he recorded during this time period", why not mention his entire 4th album "Sings Songs From His TV Series", from 1969?
It would have been a more interesting inclusion than these five readily available albums.

Thanks for the solid, informative review William. Also, I was just thinking what David commented-upon...why not include "Sings Songs from His TV Series?" That one's been OOP for a long time.
