Better than Twilight,
This review is from: The Host [DVD] (DVD)
It is increasingly visually dynamic and does have a very real feel about it. The caves are exquisitely done and are very accurate to their book descriptions with some slight alterations. The chosen actors also are well chosen for their likeness to the book characters and all do their roles justice. There are a few problems however, the fact that Melanie's conversations internally with Wanda obviously can only be demonstrated with a voiceover, although this is unavoidable it can be slightly annoying at times. There are also several scenes missed out, some for practicality and others probably to shorten the film as it is a large book. I do feel in some places they should have considered the importance of the scene more carefully. The book is less about action (other than fist fights) and more about the emotional side of Wanda an alien species growing to love the humans in the caves. I feel this could have been shown more in the film. And as they miss out a very delicate scene where Wanda helps the dying Walter, I do feel they undermine one of the most important loves of friendship in the book, which is a refreshing change to the normal romance Meyer writes about.
Overall, the film is good and is definitely worth watching despite it's flaws, especially if you haven't read the book then I think you should definitely watch it. It is certainly a better love tale than Twilight and is much more humorous.
