Customer Review

on 24 June 2005
This book is a pretty amazing read...NOX tackled it all: complex single and double curved geometry (finally I understand how these fit together), so-called 'non-standard' manufacturing techniques, 'form finding' methodology, programmatic issues, 'interactive' art, theories of 'vagueness'..this book brings it all together and offers great insight. The more the work seems to remove itself from these hopeless boxes around us, the more Spuybroek seems to have things under control technically..all this is built or buildable. The Son-O-House and D-Towr projects that were published last year in virtually every magazine all over the world, are simply beyond anything we'd normally conceive as buildable. And the book shows exactly how to do it. Beyond the first amazement one starts to get caught in the millions of cross-references, to Frei Otto (he's everywhere), to Gothics, to Islamic patterns, to Jorn Utzon, and one suddenly understands this is an architecture book, with white backgrounds and thin black lines, very exact, very serious, without any speculation on the future. As Spuybroek says in his intro: 'the cyber hype is over'..This book sets the standard for an architecture classified as non-standard.
