I read Powder by Kevin Sampson several years ago and it really stuck with me, so when stuck for something to read I looked up his other books. I found Freshers to be more realistic/believable than Powder (which was a bit of a fantasy but still a very good read!). It made me feel like I was 16 again drinking snakebite and black.
The story focuses around a teenage boy, starting university for his first year, and the kinds of unusual characters he meets. He suffers from social anxiety, and the same self-hatred that all teenagers feel from time to time, making him a realistic hero and this a slightly uncomfortable at times read (mostly from self-recognition!).
