Customer Review

on 30 December 2013
It is amazing that this novel became "forgotten", because it is short, sharp and seeringly moving. William Stoner rises from farm boy to English lecturer, apparently representing the twentieth century "American Dream" in which anyone can do anything, but instead, this is s story of thwarted ambition, stultifying marriage, vindictive enmity and repressed emotion. Despite this, there's a lot in Stoner's life arc that we don't need to pity him for - he finds his natural vocation (against the odds), is able to teach for forty years, and (eventually) finds true love, albeit briefly. This may be a tale of life's missed opportunities, but it's also a reminder of the things we should be thankful for, that we may have taken for granted as our lifetimes slip through our fingers.
