Maude is an introvert in a family of extroverts - slipping by unnoticed amongst her loud and flamboyant parents and siblings. They do not understand why she is so silent and blends into the background and, when her birthday is coming ask her what she would like for a present. However, what Maude asks for is not what she gets and her family may soon learn that being unobtrusive is not always a bad thing....
I have long loved Lauren Child's books and this one is visually a delight, although I felt that the story was a little disappointing. However, it is fun to read aloud and will appeal to those children who are, perhaps, a little shy. A good, but not brilliant, book and not quite up to her usual standard in my opinion.
