I found much of this book very moving. Mary the baby in particular is described in sensuous detail that makes her live on the page. With a different ending I would have been wondering whether to give 4 or 5 stars. But I am afraid that the way Myerson ends this just doesn't work. To me, she gratuitously spoils the credibility of the entire narrative. It is only the quality of the earlier writing that saves this from a 1 or 2 star score. Were her editors on their annual holiday when she handed the manuscript in? A bit of direct feedback and some small revisions would have made such a difference.
