I can see why The Abandoned has split the reviews so much. I've watched it a couple of times now - and although I enjoyed it the first time, I felt it was generic and predictable. However some sense of it being unsettling did stay with me, so - stuck for something to watch I just finished watching it again. Knowing the plot let me enjoy it in a different way, and although it's not short of jump scares, it's actually a deeply existential horror film, chaotic, gruesome and in some ways disturbing. I'd recommend it to genre fans as a different take on a familiar recipe. Acting, direction, cinematography and soundtrack all punching above the weight of a medium budget.
