This is the best recording of "Rigoletto" known to me and the reason is simple: all principle singers are perfectly suitable to there roles. Starting with Alfredo Kraus: Duce's role is one of the best roles Kraus has ever done. It suits to his voice to perfection and it seems so easy, even high D-flat and D. He's amazing. Starting from "Questa o quella" finishing with "La donna e mobile" everything is perfect. Now Gilda, Renata Scotto. It is my opinion that Scotto is the best Gilda ever, her voice is so clean, so childish, something that comes from the heaven. she is perfect Gilda. And what about my favourite Rigoletto of all time Ettore Bastianini? Well, Rigoletto is definitely his best role, suitable to his voice. Listen to his terifying high notes: nobody can produce the sounds Ettore does when he sings: "E foglia!", then his curse at the end of the first act, 2nd act, "la ra, la ra" followed by "Cortigiani" and the end of the 2nd act with Scotto is unbelievable and finally the last curse: "O, la maledizione" all this is so briliant, terrifying and wonderful at the same time. And finally Cossotto and Vinco are superb Madalena and Sparafuccile. This is MUST HAVE CD! "Rigoletto" is my favourite opera and this recording made me to love it. If one wants to listen to "Rigoletto" first time in his life, this is the best recording to listen to. It makes you understand the power and all the magic that "Rigoletto" has.
