Lots of twists an turns,
This review is from: Stealing the Bride (Avon Romantic Treasure) (Mass Market Paperback)
Our hero is the Marquis of Templeton he is a spy of the scarlet pimpernel variety.
The heroine is Lady Diana Fordham, she has loved Temple for many years and has waited for 9 years for him to finish with the spying game and settle down with her (she knows he is a spy, he does not know she knows). So now she has decided that she has waited long enough and stages an elaborate hoax of an elopement so that Temple will come and rescue her.
Her father mean while offers her hand to whoever brings her back. As she is an heiress many are after her. The race is on, but although Temple will rescue her he will not marry her himself but proposes to marry her to either of 2 other suitors! To complicate things further he is suspected of the murder of the man she originally eloped with, so has the law after him. Plus some French spies also want 'the bride' for their own nefarious reasons which Temple wants to find out about.
Your really feel for Diana as she tries at every turn to get her man and cheer when she does at the very end of a complex and compelling plot.
