beautiful and haunting,
This review is from: Gospel of John [DVD] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] (DVD)
This is a beautiful and haunting film with great photography and convincing acting performances. Watch it once and you will want to see it again.
A two disk offering (a 2 hour version with historical background extras, + the original 3 hour cinematic version)this is neither Hollywood hype nor a religious sermon. The dialogue is actually taken entirely from the modern NIV Gospel of John, and is entirely faithful to it. Despite this, even if you are not a Christian you will enjoy and be moved by the film. Unlike some other Jesus films the characters are believable and the period setting feels authentic.
The lead actor is actually a half Scottish and half Peruvian Shakespearian actor who lives in Edinburgh. He is made for the part.
I read online somewhere that, incredibly, Jewish rabbis in New York have actually given this film their seal of approval for the accurate and sympathetic portrayal of Jewish society in the first century.
This DVD is not available in the European region 2 format. Unfortunately, if you want to watch it you have to buy it as an import from the US, and you will need a region 1, or a region free DVD player.

Dick Baker says:
the Amazon.co.uk product description clearly states that the media IS a region-2 format (single DVD). I think these comments by PK relate to a different region-1 media product (multiple platters).

The version I originally bought (and reviewed ) off amazon was region 1(US + CANADA) as that was the only one available at that time. Since the i have also seen region 2 (uk/europe) dvds. Draw back of region 1 is you need a multiregion enabled dvd player, which luckily i have.
I still highly recommend this film by the way. Also you don't have to be a christrian to watch it. If you are even just curious about Jesus, or that period you will enjoy it.
