Outstanding Underground Treat,
This review is from: Sci-Fi Lullabies (Audio CD)
Sci-fi Lullabies is my absolute favourite Suede release. The B-Sides for me show more of the band's talent and what they are about than the singles and in some cases the album tracks. What we have here is a darker, more 'underground' representation of the kooky urban lifesongs Suede are known for, and it is a blessing that they have been collected together on one release.
The best of this collection is for me Europe Is Our Playground, a beautiful and haunting piece recorded around the 'Coming Up' era. It has stuck with me ever since I first heard it and is possible my favourite song by the band altogether. Other high points are 'Killing of a FlashBoy', 'WSD' and 'Have you Ever Been this Low?'.
I expect some of these narrowly missed being on albums - 'Young Men', 'Together' and 'My Insatiable One' would not be out of place amongst the better known releases and singles - but there is not one track amongst the 27 that is out of place, surplus to requirements or substandard. The whole double album is a treat.
