Customer Review

on 26 April 2014
I bought the Philips Hue Starter Kit to add to the integration and automation systems I already have in my home. I'm a bit of a geek!

Product arrived promptly and was set up in less than 10 minutes. It's as simple as screwing in the bulbs, connecting the bridge to your router via the included ethernet cable and getting the Hue app on your chosen device and following the prompts. Bulbs are really flexible in that they have a huge range of colours available and the app allows you to save different colour schemes. A favourite setting for my bedroom light is to set it to the 'Relax' colour scheme and set it to switch off in 30 minutes, fading out for the last nine minutes - a great way to drift off and have the lights switch itself off! Philips have thoughtfully opened the API so there are a wide range of other Hue apps available (at lest on the Apple App Store) with various functions such as disco lights that react to your music and one that monitors your TV and replicates the dominant colours in your lights. If you have a Pebble smart watch, there's even an app for that to control your lights called Huebble. It also has an IFTTT.com channel so your can integrate the system further and setup rules - for example, you can have a bulb perform a colour loop if you are tagged in a Facebook post!

Philips have also extended the Hue range with the 'Friends of Hue' products such as lamps and light strips that integrate with the system.

One things to note is that in this kit the bulbs are E27 screw bulbs which are the larger screw bulbs and not that common in UK households. I have E14 (smaller screw) and B22 adapters to fit them to my lights and they work great although they do add to the size of the bulbs.

All-in-all I'm very impressed with the system from the ease of setup and use to the flexibility. So why only 4 stars? Price. £180 for the starter kit is not inconsiderable. Even £150 would be a bit easier to swallow. Each additional bulb is £50 too.

Pros

+ Easy to setup
+ Great flexibility and integration features
+ Extended range with Friends of Hue products
