I hate reviews of products not yet released,
This review is from: Steve Coogan Live - As Alan Partridge And Other Less Successful Characters [DVD] (DVD)
...but I know Coogan got a lot of stick for this tour, e.g. lack of prep, forgetting lines etc. so I thought I'd get in now to defend the man. Well, I hope this DVD is from the latter half of the tour, because when I saw him, he was brilliant. His performances were absolutely spot on. I think the DVD title says it all - Partridge was by far and away the best half of this show - I really hope they include it all and don't edit it. Especially the last song - which was classic! If you were there, you know the song I mean - I can't type its title!!!
Pauline Calf was good but not as good as previous shows, Paul Calf was much better, as was Duncan Thickett. But Tommy Saxondale was disappointing, proving (for me anyway) that a great sitcom character does not always translate well to stand up. Fortunately, that is not the case with Partridge. We were treated to a classic motivational Partridge presentation (bit like the one from the last DVD - but still very funny), a `chat' with a guest and finally a performance of a play about Sir Thomas More. This was the best bit for me - I loved it.
The lovely Alice Lowe was great support for Coogan. She was great when she played alongside Steve, as she was in Harry and Paul.
Assuming this is the full unedited show, this is brilliant. Fans of Coogan must see this - and forget about the poor press reviews from last year.....
