This is the second cheap knock-off light modifier I've bought (the other was a beauty-dish from another company) and this one too is well made. It's a minor pain to put together but I was expecting that because of the shape. Bending rods to fit an ordinary softbox is bad enough so a canoe-shaped one was always going to be hard. I had to elicit the aid of the wife to get it done.
Anyway, once put together it is sturdy but not so heavy it drags down the front of my Elinchrom lights. All the pieces fit together nicely with enough spare material on the diffusers to attach them comfortably.
The light is nice and even from top to bottom which was a pleasant surprise as I was expecting bright spots in the centre. It also throws out a very soft wrap-around light. On faces you would hardly need a fill or reflector if the light was close. It really does wrap around.
The downside is that even with the egg-crate attached and the front diffuser well recessed there is still a lot of spill. You will need to face this a good way away from the background if you want it totally dark and then you will need to be careful of lens flare because of the same spill. I don't think this is a problem with this particular brand as everything is nice and tight where it should be. It's more an issue with my small studio I think.
The vent above the light is handy if you have the modelling lights on all the time and the flash at high power. Just open it up when the fans kick in and keep shooting. Things cool down again very quickly with the flap open.
All in all a good buy and I would buy another one.
