This review is from: Paris Requiem (Paperback)
I hadn't come across this writer before but saw the book recommended somewhere. I enjoyed it on the whole but think it would have benefitted from a bit of editing to reduce the length by about a third. I am not against long books, I love immersing myself in them but this seemed unnecessarily long and then the denouement was rather rushed at the end. The Dreyfus affair loomed over proceedings but if one wasn't aware of the facts of the case the impact would have been lost as no real details were given of what it was all about but one learnt a lot about the impact on French society. Parallel with this theme was one about women and their nervous systems and their place in society.
Being a great Francophile I enjoyed the Parisian background, being a historian I knew the background facts of Dreyfus so enjoyed the read but I'm not sure I would go out of my way to read any more by the same author.
